Snakes of Louisiana

Snakes

If you think snakes are creepy, Snakes of Louisiana will definitely give you the chill factor. Make this lens a part of your Halloween celebration today by going to see all of the snake images that new Giant Squid, Naturegirl7 has on display. This lens is highly educational and very interesting -- not intended for giving you the creeps, but it sure can! Have you got enough nerve to watch the YouTube video of a python becoming entwined in a man's shorts? I think I would be looking for the quickest way to make myself a skirt!

Robeez Baby Shoes

Baby Feet

Today is my first experience with Robeez footwear for infants and toddlers. I am a convert! At Robeez Baby Shoes, new Giant Squid, JasonE displays a very cute and adorable selection of Robeez soft-all-over, but skid-resistant shoes that wrap a child's feet in wonderment. They are embellished with your choice of designs such as cars, trains, flowers, and even an octopus! My favorites are the flower ones -- the Infant/Toddler Tulip Slip-on is my most favorite because I just adore tulips! The lens is divided into themes for the shoes including the flower-theme as well as Cats, Dogs, Bunnies; Amphibians, Fish, Reptiles; Sports; and more. Lovely, just lovely.

My Journey Into Watercolor

Tubes of Artists' Water Color Paints

Wow! Did you know that watercolor is considered the most difficult paint technique to master? So beautiful, though. New Giant Squid, Lakeerieartists didn't know it when she started learning and even had no other painting experience! My Journey into Watercolor is her account of falling in love with and learning watercolor. She discusses how her style differs from tradional watercolorists since she "wasn't educated in a classical fashion in art school" and "came at watercolor training in a somewhat backwards way." She includes recommendations for books and tools and shows some beautiful images. This lens is a well-put-together source for anyone ready to learn this art form.

RubikCubism

Erno Rubik with His Invention the Rubik Cube Puzzle

Even though Erno Rubik has a great intellect, I wonder if he ever dreamed that his puzzles would spawn a new artform: Rubicubism. Yes, some creatives out there are bargain-hunting for batches of the cubes to use in making everything from a mosaic-style Rubik's Cube Mario Brother to an Elvis to an Amy Winehouse. RubikCubism - Rubik's Cube Art, by another new Giant Squid, Mosaic, will whet your appetite for this interesting artform. You can get intricate or just do something easy like the beginner's example shown. The lens includes example artwork, suggestions for how to get cubes at less than retail, how to photoshop what you want to produce, some how-tos, and some "advanced" pointers.

Beginners' Guide To Playing The Harmonica

Little Sonny - Black and Blue

As a fan of the blues, I appreciate and love the harmonica. In fact, I have one! Every once in a while I'll pick it up and try to play it, but I've never really tried to "learn" how to play it. If you're ready to learn how to play it yourself, Beginners' Guide To Playing The Harmonica is the perfect lens for you. It's created by new Giant Squid Mac33 who is learning himself! You'll be following in his footsteps. He offers tips on getting started, recommendations for your first "beginning" harmonica, free tabs websites, his favorite YouTube lessons, and more.

Lensmaster Joubess Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

Joubess: It is so easy to get some content up on a lens and publish it quickly.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

Joubess: First, add the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity as charities. You don't have much that would help survivors of disasters. I'd like it if the text/write modules allowed more than 10,000 characters. Some of my lenses are episode lists and blurbs about TV shows and I like to use one module per season.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

Joubess: Any time I think up a new idea for a niche website, I put it up on Squidoo, too. Sometimes I put up new lenses to expand on a single area of a broader topic, like Hurricane Gustav vs. Hurricane Katrina.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

Joubess: 34, all but 6-7 are published.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

Invader Zim Episodes

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

Joubess: Taking action, hard work and persistence.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

Joubess: Just do it. Just put up a lens and publish it. You can add to it and refine it later. But get it made and published. Take action.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

Joubess: Hurricane Katrina and visit my Hurricane Katrina Pictures blog.

My Second Life in Second Life

Virtual Doorway to a Better World

New Giant Squid, Susannaduffy, has a Second Life as Queenie Moriarty, Marriage Maestra. In that second life, she performs marriage ceremonies -- around 700 of them! She's even performed a renewal ceremony for a couple she previously married! Her virtual cathedral, Ave Stella Maris, has been awarded Best Church Build in SL. This is my first time reading about someone's experience of and participation in Second Life. Susanna says she even makes a little money at it. What I personally like most about her lens on it is that her experience with it gives her the chance to be "in constant contact with happy people." How cool is that? Happy people making you smile. An included YouTube Video shows Queenie Moriarty in her SL world, and another shows a preview of tomorow night's (Oct. 24) CSI: NY episode where Second Life is integrated into the show. Rather fascinating. Let Susanna tell you more at My Second Life in Second Life.

October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Pink Ribbon - Breast Cancer Awareness

To promote Breast Cancer Awareness, Squid Activist, Jaguar Julie has created a lens showcasing pink KitchenAid appliances and gadgets. Visit Cook for the Cure -- Think Pink in Your Kitchen with KitchenAid, and read all about how to purchase and register your pink product so that it generates a donation from KitchenAid of up to $50 to Komen for the Cure -- a foundation set up in honor of Susan G. Komen, the beloved sister of Nancy G. Brinker, who made a promise to Susan "that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer."

Check out the newspaper Julie received last Saturday in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Out On The Farm

Simple Life II
New Giant Squid, Jewelsofawe, takes you Out on the Farm. Her sister-in-law has a little piece of heaven out in the country where Jewels and her hubby love to visit. There, they can get into a state of "zen bliss." At this lens you will meet the farm animals through her many photos. It's a treat to see the beautiful colors and markings on the chickens and to learn about some of the animals' characteristics. Seems like there's always a bully somewhere on the farm, but I am thinking that the way Jewels describes the Intimidator makes him pretty much the winner in the rooster-bully department. See photos of the goats, the emus, the guineas, the horses -- even a passing deer family. Oh! And the photos of the pears on the tree: Would love to be able to pick one right off the page. They look so juicy! ...Enjoy your visit!

Ten Ways To Use A Tent

A Moor and a Christian Playing Chess in a Tent, from the "Book of Games, Chess, Dice and Boards"

A huge reason for why I love Squidoo is that you get to see things through another person's eyes. Take Ten Ways To Use A Tent: I never would have thought of using a tent as a home for my pet cat and her new family. In fact, I don't believe I would ever have thought of very many of these unusual, but practical, ideas for using a tent. This lens comes from new Giant Squid LindaJM -- another previously reviewed lensmaster!

Dress Up Your Food for Halloween - Lots of Eyeball Recipes

Eyeball Buddies -- Buy at AllPosters.com

Beeobrien is another new Giant Squid who has been reviewed here before. In keeping with my promise to review a lens from each of the new Giant Squids, she gets another well-deserved shout-out. I saw on her lensmaster page that she has a website about cooking, and then I remembered those cool recipes from her contest-winning (Future Giants Halloween Contest) lens on eyeball recipes. Her intro starts with, "No, not recipes that use eyeballs as an ingredient. If that's what you're looking for, go back to Google and keep searching." That's cute. Thankfully, Dress Up Your Food for Halloween - Lots of Eyeball Recipes does not have recipes with eyeballs in them but is full of recipes for making food that looks like eyeballs. Just take a gander at the pix! Makes me squeamish! There are disgusting deviled eyeballs, lychee eyeballs, and ewww!, how about a bowl of sweet 'n' sour chicken eyeballs? Get yourself some great recipes here just in time for celebrating Halloween and sure to delight kids everywhere. Fun recommendations as well; have you bought your brain gelatin mold yecch, er, yet?

Lensmaster ComfortDoc Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

ComfortDoc: Squidoo is a great way for me to create health promotion lenses, discuss overlooked topics and promote helpful resources. It has also been a way of creating lenses on other topics, charities, organization, people and products and current events that I want to promote.

Squidoo also gives me an easy way to donate funds to charity by just making a lens page. About 1/3 of my profits are donated to a variety of charities. The greatest percentage is to the Squidoo Charity Fund, because I have 10% of each lens going towards this charity. Because of this and my work with the Squidoo Activists, I was recently recognized as the Generous Giant, Giant Squid.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

ComfortDoc: I think there is always room for improvement with anything that you are doing. I continue to be amazed at what the Squidoo developers come up with as new modules for us to use. My favorite recent one is the Donations Module that makes it easier for readers to donate directly to their favorite charity.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

ComfortDoc: I get my inspiration from a variety of different areas in which I have an interest either professionally or personally.

  1. Grief & Loss Expert

  2. Physician/Health Educator

  3. Nutrition Professor

  4. Being a Mother to two almost 'tween girls

  5. Charities that I am interested in promoting

  6. Peace Promotion

  7. Health Education and Wellness Promotion

  8. Current Events

  9. Other interests – nature, going green and products that I use.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

ComfortDoc: At this point, I am nearing 200 lenses which with the holidays coming up and getting several WIP's published; I anticipate I will reach long before Christmas.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

ComfortDoc: It alternates between How to Write a Condolence Note or a Sympathy Note and Loss, Grief and Bereavement. My Dr. Randy Pausch - A Superhero lens also was very popular before and then after his untimely death.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

ComfortDoc: Content

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

ComfortDoc:

  1. Take a look at a variety of different Giant Squid Lenses to see the many different ways that these lensmasters have used the different modules and developed different styles.

  2. Experiment with the different available modules. Remember to check for new ones.

  3. Get involved with the Squidoo Community. Join the Groups, Post good information (or comments) on SquidU. Create a group as a way to meet other lensmasters (you can even invite them personally to join your group).

A Package From Santa

Christmas Dreams

Santa Claus ceased to exist when I was able to recognize my mom's handwriting. My sister and I got matching blue bicycles that year. What better way to tell them apart under the Christmas tree than to hang a name tag on them? Well, since my mom had supposedly gone to bed before Santa had arrived and had only gotten up when we did, it was just a matter of adding things up. Two and two made four. Yep, the magic was officially gone. But, I remember that magic to this day -- with no indictments against anyone for the "stories" told about Santa. That's why I can recommend A Package From Santa from new Giant Squid Vbright105. She offers tips and ideas for keeping your child believing in Santa for as long as possible -- such as helping your child write a letter to Santa, or sending him or her a postcard "From Santa" on "vacation." Check it out for more ideas and some product recommendations. How about a can of Reindeer Food for Rudolph and the rest of his team? That's magic.

Paperweights

A Collection of Clichy Millefiori Weights -- Buy at AllPosters.com

The paperweight we had in our living room when I was growing up was a source of beauty and comfort for me. When you are little and have no control over the chaos in your life, little things like this hold a secret. They tell you that there can be beauty and order in the world. We moved a lot; I don't know where it is now, but I like to think that it's a source of comfort and beauty for some other little kid. So, I was naturally curious when I saw the link to Paperweights. The headline picture looks very much like the one I remember from childhood. It's a millefiori -- meaning "a thousand flowers." Stazjia, another brand new Giant Squid, writes about the history of paperweights, how they are made, and shows some beautiful pictures of various kinds of paperweights -- along with some videos of some of the steps in making these glass beauties, and some very nice book selections. All in all, an informative and beautiful lens.

What Does Squidoorati Do?

Squidoo Lens Reviews Commentary and InteractionSquidoorati.alltop shows the top five most-recently updated lenses out of the Top 100 in each category. That's what it does -- it does it very well. It gets an RSS feed from your updated or Squidcasted lens.

It is hoped that Alltop's traffic will see Squidoorati, learn more about Squidoo, and change its perception of it as a spammer's haven. Isn't that great?!

If you run across any lenses while you are there that you think are spam (or of poor quality), please let me know.

We Are Squidoorati!

Featured in AlltopAfter having done some asking around the other day to see what those not affiliated with us think about Squidoo, I found that it seems to be that the pervading perception is STILL that Squidoo is for spammers! Well, knowing what great lenses Squidooers produce, that just didn't sit well with me. So, I submitted Squidoo to Alltop.com's founder, Guy Kawasaki. He has been communicating with me through the weekend, and I am now very proud to say that there is a whole new internet site out there right now that showcases the amazing lenses built at Squidoo: Squidoorati.alltop.com! Unexpected, is an Acknowledgment and a section for my Teach Children Character lens. For that, I am humbled and grateful. Thanks again, Guy! And a big, big thank you to Seth Godin for giving Squidoorati the green light!

Folks, go check out Squidoorati! If you find yourself featured, grab yourself a badge (there are smaller ones than the big and happy shout-out one you see here :D). Tell me what you think about Squidoorati. If you like it, make sure to spread the word about it!

How To Reuse Egg Cartons?

Recycle Symbol

If you know new Giant Squid a_willow, you know she loves to re-use things. You've probably seen her lenses on how to reuse toilet-paper rolls (a Lens of the Day for her), or the one about reusing paper bags, and maybe even the one about reusing mouse pads, but have you seen her How to Reuse Egg Cartons? lens? -- just like in her other recycle lenses, you'll find lots of great ideas.

News To Come!

Squidoo Lens Reviews Commentary and InteractionWhat an exciting weekend! I hope to have some news for you at least by early afternoon today. Unfortunately, I will be out of town and so cannot be here to see everything to fruition. But, if anything does happen while I'm away, Joan4 is going to leave you an announcement in the comments section of this post. I hope you will see it as a wonderful thing for lensmasters! Stay tuned!

Lensmaster NancyOram Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

NancyOram: I have always been passionate about adding truly good content to the web and Squidoo stands for this first and foremost. I also love the fact that Squidoo makes it easy to put up a really good web page without having to learn how to make a web site yourself, which I struggled with for years.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better

NancyOram: There's always room for improvement, but it's close to perfect. Squidoo is good about listening to suggestions and often implementing them. They are constantly improving.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

NancyOram: I started with my most obvious interests and passions, then the niche businesses I had, including my eBay store. I have 70 lenses now, and I still haven't exhausted my interests. Sometimes I wake up at 3 in the morning with a thought and scribble it down in the dark so I don't forget. When I wake up in the morning I sometimes find it was a good idea, and sometimes I wonder, "What on earth was I dreaming?"

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

NancyOram: 70 at this point.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

NancyOram: My most popular lens has consistently been Old Fashioned Candy Making Secrets and Recipes

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

NancyOram: Determination, without a doubt.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

NancyOram: Just start making that lens. You can junk it and start over if you don't like it, but you have to start using the modules and seeing how it all comes together. Then, as you have questions, go to SquidU and the forum and find the answers, that way they learn how to make a lens and start participating in the community at the same time.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

NancyOram: This is really hard, and my answer might be different tomorrow, but I'll say How to Start Your Genealogy because I feel passionate about researching your family tree. It's something that grounds people, and we could all use that.

Nancy aka NancyOram

Lensmaster EditorDave Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

EditorDave: WOW! I love how easy Squidoo makes it for us to "YELL FROM THE TREES" about what we're passionate about! I'm not much of a "techie", so even though I've always wanted to have my own "web-pages", I was never able to create nice-looking, cover-all-the-bases, web pages with all the bells and whistles. Squidoo gives us the bells and whistles... and more!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

EditorDave: Squidoo is pretty much *PERFECT!* ... I don't think there's much more you could do to make it better. It's great the way it is!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

EditorDave: Inspiration comes from all over and at all times. I see something that strikes my fancy... I'll make a lens on it. Of course, a lot of my lenses come from my past experiences with the weird and the wild... whether it's relatives of the Komodo Dragons or Sharks or Fruitbats or stuff I had for breakfast like Bananas or Mangos or Pineapples, I've had enough pleasant experiences with them that I'd like to share them with others. Same goes for places I've traveled and places I've lived such as Montana, New Mexico, Guam, Palau, Hawaii, Hokkaido Japan, Narita Airport, and San Francisco Bay Area (Flying Tour and San Francisco Mini Vacaion). Sometimes my inspiration comes from the pure boredom of the cubicle world, Cubicle Makeover and Going Nuts At Work and sometimes it comes from the books I read, the movies I watch, and my passions such as alternate energy, Oceanography and Marine Biology, teaching/homeschooling, and Japanese movies. Whew! So much inspiration, so little time!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

At last count, 144 lenses. But I also have a few more "in the works"...

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

EditorDave: It seems to be about a tie between my Komodo Dragon lens, my Submarine lens, my Guam lens and my Cubicle lens. Although, for a while, my Komodo Dragon lens made it to the TOP 100 for 5 days... and it has consistently been up in the TOP 100 of the Animals and Nature section.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

EditorDave: I'm a constant writer and photographer?

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

For the newbie? (I love to help newbies--I love to teach!) I suggest just describing something you are really passionate about. Take pictures (if you can) of what you are passionate about. If you don't have a digital camera, you can get your film developed at places that can put your film images on CD as well as on prints. Once you have the digital prints, you can load them into your computer and thus into your Squidoo. Squidoo makes this all so easy (and there are great Squidoo Angels and Giant Squids who will pull alongside and help out you newbies as well--I've had great help from Squid Angels and Giant Squids!").

editorialize: Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

I've got so many, it's tough to pick just one. I'd suggest that folks go to my list of lenses and scroll through all of them... and pick the ones they like and say something in comments and rate them. Sometimes, I wish they'd scroll down to the bottom of the list and work their way up. [grin] Komodo Dragon lens make it to the TOP 100 again and maybe even be Lens of the Day (LOTD)!

File-Sharing Programs And Their Effect On The Movie Industry

Early Drive-In Theater, Los Angeles, California

Another new Giant Squid, RichLeigh, shares his thoughts on File-Sharing Programs And Their Effect On The Movie Industry. Among other things, he discusses illegal file sharing and what the movie industry might do about it. It sure would be nice to get this industry into the 21st century! Otherwise, we movie lovers will be the ultimate losers.

The Value Of A Timer

Garden Friends: Busy Bee

Now that we have some new Giant Squids, I thought it might be appropriate to spotlight some of their lenses here this week. To start with a lens on productivity seemed appropriate as well.

The poll asks if you use a timer or have used a timer to help keep yourself on schedule. I have, but not on a regular basis. To stay focused, organized and productive, Ebay-grandma, makes the case very nicely for The Value Of A Timer.

One-Hit Wonder!

Squidoo Lens Reviews Commentary and InteractionGes describes himself as "a bloke in his thirties having a go at this Squidoo thing." He's been on Squidoo since September 15 -- just what, two, three weeks ago? He's created a total of one lens, and yesterday that lens was awarded Lens of the Day. I feel he deserves a quick shout-out; check out his Honey Badgers.

Anyone know of a one-hit wonder type of lens anywhere?

Lensmaster RMS Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

RMS: I love making lenses but I think it's the Squidoo.com community that I am really passionate about. I've never come across such a huge group of people online who are all so willing to help one another. It's really a wonderful experience.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

RMS: This is a hard question to answer because there are a lot of things that inspire me to make my lenses. Sometimes I make lenses about my favorite hobbies, sometimes I make them to share information and other times I just make them for fun. I guess it just depends on my mood for the day.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

RMS: I have 196 published lenses and thousands more waiting in my mind to be built! [As of this posting, RMS has produced 200 total lenses!]

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

RMS: Right now my highest ranking lens is Giant Squid Mentor, where I answer questions about the Giant Squid lensmaster program but I think my most popular overall would have to be my Best Panini Sandwich Recipes lens. It's been getting thousands of hits on a weekly basis.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

RMS: The power of the Squidoo community as a whole.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

RMS: I think the first thing a newbie to Squidoo.com should do is visit the Squidoo Answer Deck. That's the best place to go to learn the answers to all of your Squidoo questions.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

RMS: Actually it's my Giant Squid Community Showcase blog that I'd like the whole Squidoo.com world to know about. It's where I spotlight some of the best lenses made by the Giant Squid lensmasters. It not only contains praise for their lenses but also terrific Squidoo tips and lens crafting ideas and inspiration. Even though it only features lenses made by Giants, I think it's a great read for every lensmaster who is interested in becoming more successful at Squidoo.

Lensmaster CounselMom Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

CounselMom: I love the versatility of Squidoo and all the options and features. Squidoo has almost limitless possibilities.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

CounselMom: I doubt anything is ever truly perfect so I won't say that Squidoo is either. But, since I don't understand website development, etc all that well I think Squidoo is pretty great the way it is!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

CounselMom: My inspiration comes from books I read, experiences I have, and things I hear and see. Recently a family member experienced a loss which inspired me to write my lens on Tear Bottles.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

CounselMom: I currently have 10 lenses, but have ideas for many more. I'd love to become a Giant Squid in the near future. [As of this posting, CounselMom has produced 15 total lenses!]

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

CounselMom: My most popular lens right now is my lens on Ezekiel Bread.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

CounselMom: Persistence

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

CounselMom: Explore and then create a lens that they can play around with and experiment with all the different modules.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?
