Last Call

Challenge: Winding Road -- Buy at AllPosters.com

See that image? It reads, "Effort and courage are not enough without purpose and direction."

In aspiring to be a Giant Squid, those who know me would probably agree that I would not be one now had it not been for the "purpose and direction" of a team.

One of the team leaders for our last Giant Squid Challenge played the definitive role in my joining up with Joan's Jolly Judicious Jetsetters. She asked me why I had declined Joan's invitation to be in Joan's group. "It's all in fun, and you know that," she said to me.

Well, when I had declined, it was because I had thought I had to "commit" to move from my 27 lenses to at least 50. As time went on during recruitment, though, I had learned that it would be possible to sign up with Joan's team without actually committing to become a Giant Squid — just to help add to the team's lens count and try to win for being the team with the most lenses built.

After the cracking of the whip (yes, it was you a_willow, and thank you ;) to get me to change my mind, I signed on with Joan (and thank you, Joan :).

During the course of the challenge, it did become an actual challenge. And here I am, a Giant Squid — and a team leader for one of the teams!

So, I say to you: Join a team, even if you have ten lenses, or even just one. Help your team build their lens count. With purpose and direction, you, too, may be a Giant "before your time."

Join up with us, won't you? Do hurry, though! The challenge starts this coming Saturday, August first!

Please choose a team:

Rajays Rocking Squids

Kab's Fab Squid Squad

Willow's Wonder Squids

Jolly Judicious Jetsetters

Team One (MiMi's Team)

Winner: Why Should A Squid Use Twitter?

Thank you, Christine McGee, Pastiche, and Spook for responding to the Question Of The Week!

This week, our winner is... Spook. ...Congratulations!

Spook's response to the QOTW (Why should lensmasters consider joining Twitter?):

As it is another conduit to mix with Squidoo friends, keep up with their news and follow the lenses they post, either their own or better still someone else's. Often this gives you an insight to a great lens you might otherwise have missed.

Here are all 51 of Spook's lenses:

Squidoo Lens Reviews Question of the Week

Why should lensmasters consider joining Twitter?

Groups And Challenges Biggest Lesson Winner

This week, we have two responses to the Question Of The Week, one of which comes from Spirituality, who won last week, so I am going to link to her websites since her lenses were so recently linked. Susan52 also responded, with an equally great answer, so her lenses, in all their glory, are linked below. Congratulations, Susan and Katinka!

Katinka responded to the QOTW (If you are participating in the RocketMoms, or the Giant Squid Challenge, or Giant Squid Summer School, what are you learning — the biggest lesson?):

The main thing I've learned is how important it is to step out of your comfort zone ocasionally. Those challenges set you thinking about making lenses in ways that you just hadn't done before. Because someone else is setting the challege.

Another thing I've learned - and from a business perspective this is a real important one - to make products on informational lenses part of the story. For instance, my lenses about spiritual quotes have NEVER sold a single book with spiritual quotes. So now I'm trying selling only ONE product: a notebook people can write their own spiritual quotes in. Because that's part of my story: the fun of collecting spiritual quotes. No idea if it will work, but it's better than showcasing books that people aren't clicking on, let alone buying.

Katinka is a student of religion and spirituality. Visit her site on religion and spirituality: katinkahesselink.net, and her spiritual blog: All Considering.

Susan's response:

Probably the biggest thing I've learned from RocketMoms and Giant Squid Summer School is that I actually can write on demand. I've never been confident enough to commit to any writing project for pay that would require assignments and deadlines. Squidoo has taught me how to be creative enough in my thinking that I've actually come up with some of my best writing as a result of assignments on topics that I probably wouldn't have considered on my own. It's amazing how that experience has affected my confidence level.

Thank you for playing, ladies!

If you had to limit your social-network memberships to just three sites, which three would it be — and why?

We had two posters from last week, and they both win! Congratulations Spirituality and RickyRobi!

Spirituality's website: Religious and Spiritual Wisdom

RickyRobi's website: Games for the Gamer

Thank you, ladies.

...They responded to this question: If you had to limit your social-network memberships to just three sites, which three would it be — and why?

Spirituality: It would be a pity to have to limit myself to only three - but the answer is pretty simple: squidoo, twitter and facebook. Those are the only three social networking sites I visit daily after all.

RickyRobi: I would have to say Squidoo, tagfoot and twitter. The reasons are the same for all three - Fun, Friendly and Supportive.

New Giants And Purple Stars

Congratulations to all new Giant Squids and Giant Squid 100s!

It was a happy bunch of Squids online, today. The Giant Squid Community Organizers reached deep and did not keep potential Giants and hopeful Giant 100s waiting long. Way before the worry and self-doubt took a foothold, the GSCOs were emailing announcements to the new Giants and the new Giant 100s.

Today, I am a new Giant Squid. It's hard to explain how that feels because I believe it's just too much to take in all at once. Therein lies a hint as to the importance of becoming a Giant Squid.

Anyway, today had a special surprise for some of us new Giants — the purple stars! I'm pretty sure that I don't know who all received the award, so if you are a new Giant Squid who received a purple-star for one or more of your lenses, let me know -- I'd like to build up the purple-star shout-out list that I have started below:

Again, congratulations to all Giants. You dedicated yourself to excellence, and it paid off. Savor the win!

To the potential Giants who did not receive their Giant Squid badge today, don't let it deter you from your goals. Keep striving!

And to us all: Onward!
