A Poet, A Photographer, and a Farmer

The exciting thing about writing for Squidoo Lens Reviews is finding a gem in the midst of 1 million plus lenses. Not only ones I found, but also the discoveries of my fellow writers. This week, for my final review, I found just such a lens.

I discovered Graple's work while looking for fiction author lenses to bless and quickly became a fan. In this article, "This Farmer's Hands: Poetry & Photography from Down on the Farm." Graple is the photographer, her husband is the poet, and the farmer is named Jonas. Each are artists in their own way and they come together to tell the story of organic cattle farming and its related issues.

This page touches on so many topics that are important to me and many others - healthy food, animal welfare, sustainability, our climate, farmers' rights, etc.

My husband and I enjoy eating meat, but due to the issues mentioned above, we have chosen to go meatless at least one day a week. And, the meat we do buy (for the most part) is local and organic. I meet farmers like Jonas all the time, who are artists of the land. Knowing where my meat comes from and how the animals are raised is comforting to me.

Graple's project involved getting permission to follow Jonas around and photograph his hands while at work. Her husband then wrote poetry to go with the photographs. The results are simply beautiful and paint a picture of this farmer's life far beyond words and information.

Her article tells a story of hard work, of connection to the land, and of relationships. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

On another note, I want to thank MiMi aka GrowWear for the opportunity to write for Squidoo Lens Reviews. She is one of a kind and has done the Squidoo community a great service through this site. I wish her all the best in her Squidoo journey.

Baseball is Back. Life is Good!

BASEBALL LOGO card
I am 'passionate' about the game of baseball -- major league, minor league, little league - I love it all. With Opening Day of the 2011 MLB Baseball Season less than a month away, my joy for "The Boys of Summer" returns.

For my final review for Squidoo Lens Review, I wanted to choose a baseball-related lens. The problem became choosing 'just one', which I found impossible to do. There so are many excellent stories on Squidoo about America's pastime that I decided to recognize several I found outstanding.

Spring Training is in full swing, and avid baseball and St. Louis Cardinal fan Mary Beth (mbgphoto) is currently in Jupiter, Florida soaking up the sunshine and watching her Cardinals get ready for the 2011 season -- St. Louis Cardinal Spring Training.

Bev of BevsPaper has been a baseball fan since childhood. Her baseball story is about one of the all-time 'greats' of baseball, the 'Say Hey Kid'-- Willie Mays A Baseball Legend.

Baseball may be my 'passion', but 'baseball fields for children and the community' is the passion for Nancy (OhMe on Squidoo). Nancy has helped organize events in her small town of Pendleton, SC to raise money to rebuild the baseball fields in Veteran's Park through a project called "Step Up To The Plate". She has also written several Squidoo lenses about this project and worked to have "Friends of the Park" approved as an official Squidoo Charity. To date, more than $26,000 has been raised, with $1,733.53 coming from Squidoo and generous lensmasters. Read all about how one small town resident has found a way to make people work together to 'make a difference' in Step Up To The Plate For Veterans Park in Pendleton SC.

Ellen (Greekgeek on Squidoo) wrote a very special baseball lens .... the story of how a baseball player changed the world -- Jackie Robinson: The Story of an American Hero Even if you are not a baseball fan, you will be impressed with this story, as it is more than the story about a baseball player; it is the story that reminds us why it's worth remembering the lesson he taught America.

There are many more fabulous baseball stories on Squidoo. For fans... and more, it would be worth your while to check them out.
