Lensmaster AJ2008 Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

AJ2008: Through Squidoo I have been able to indulge in my passion to write about and comment about things that I or my family have experienced and boy, have we experienced many, many things. I also believe that everyone on this planet should take the opportunity to help each other when they can and Squidoo enables you to do this.

I have always wanted to write and having recently started suffering extreme symptoms caused by Otosclerosis it has forced me to adjust my life in order to cope with it. I am unable to work as I have to take it easy for the time being. For me "taking it easy" includes sitting at the PC and writing, as it is walking and moving around that can cause my balance and co-ordination problems. So in my case my illness has actually had some benefits as I no longer need to feel guilty about writing rather than doing the ironing!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

AJ2008: Squidoo is amazing! I have nothing but admiration for Seth Godin - here is someone who is already a successful businessman and he has come up with a way to help other individuals and charities. He is giving something back to the world. I think Squidoo would be even better if ALL lensmasters shared this ideal. Don't get me wrong, I think many lensmasters do share this ideal but I am sure that many of us have clicked through to a lens, only to realise pretty quickly that the whole point of the lens is to make money for the lensmaster rather than help people. I don't see any harm in people making money as an added benefit, but would prefer that their main motivation be to create a lens to share information, rather than sell it.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

AJ2008: I am inspired by many things, but mostly news items, webpages and books that are relevant to the topics in which I have an interest. I have identified two main "niche" areas where I feel I have sufficient experience to qualify me on which to write lenses: Children and parenting plus "Green" issues in the home.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

AJ2008: I have written 7 lenses so far (the list is at www.squidoo.com/alwaysjuggling) and have ideas for more. I have just formed a Child and Parenting Group on Squidoo, where I am trying to bring together some top quality lenses that deal with the many serious and sometimes difficult issues that face children, parents and carers.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

AJ2008: My most popular lens is www.squidoo.com/bullyingatprimaryschool, which has reached a lensranking of 245 and is still my most visited lens.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

AJ2008: I think other experienced lensmasters recognise me as someone who gives priority to writing helpful lenses, rather than trying to "make a quick buck" on Squidoo.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

AJ2008: Get a notebook or create a word document in which to save links to, and make notes about all the lenses that they find helpful as they navigate around Squidoo to learn how it all works.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

AJ2008: As well as the Bullying lens, my lens on Auditory Processing Disorder is one that I would like every parent and teacher in the world to read. APD affects one in ten children, which is far more than dyslexia. However, the majority of parents, teachers and health professionals have not heard of it. As a result, many children remain undiagnosed and these children will have many, many difficulties both socially and academically if they don't get the support they need. One of my children has APD and dyslexia and my research into the condition has shown me that we are very, very lucky to have found out what was wrong relatively quickly. I have already had a message posted on my lens to say that the information has been of great help to someone and I hope it will help a lot more people, particularly parents who suspect that something is not quite right with their child but no one can tell them why. Just knowing that a child has APD makes all the difference. The irony is that the strategies used to help them can, in many cases, cost absolutely nothing to implement.

Lensmaster SoundFinance Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

SoundFinance: It is so quick and easy to complete a lens. They look great and I love the fact that you can contribute to charity to any level you like with your earnings.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

SoundFinance: I thought it was great the way it was before but the team at Squidoo have made some changes and well, what can I say...? Even today I've come across some new features. They are amazing.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

SoundFinance: When I feel there is a need to share some knowledge I like to share that with a lens. I have just completed my latest lens on OCD. It can be viewed here: OCD Treatment. My previous new lens was put together with my late grandmother and a special friend in mind Recipes for Diabetics. They are still a work in progress. So, watch out for more to come.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

SoundFinance: I now have 8 lenses - that's supposed to be a lucky number isn't it?

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

SoundFinance: By far the most popular lens would be Fun Wedding Shower Games. I often get between 260 and 300 visitors in a 7 day period.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

SoundFinance: The enjoyment of helping others such as with my lens on controlling debt.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

SoundFinance: Not be afraid and just to get started. Make mistakes - that's how we learn. With Squidoo mistakes are hard to make anyway. If you have a passion Squidoo is a wonderful way to share it. I made a mistake on the second lens I created - I spelt Dachshund incorrectly in the URL but I've left it that way. You can't change the address unless you redo everything. Now I just make sure I have the correct spelling and copy and paste it to be sure:)

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

SoundFinance: Gosh I've already mentioned my two newest lenses, but I'll repeat them OCD Treatment and Recipes for Diabetics.
In saying that I just love chocolate and think everyone should know about the benefits of chocolate.

My New Lens

Beautiful Life

Since I rarely get time to build lenses, and since building this blog has inspired and motivated me, I decided to make time to put together a lens that has been on my mind for a while now. Without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to my new lens: Top 10 Personal Growth Music Videos. You may be surprised to learn what they are. Don't worry, I won't be introducing my own lenses often -- probably rarely, as usual. :)

Laws Of Attraction In The Science Of Getting Rich

Blossom and Grow

If the old-time language in Wallace D. Wattles' great book, The Science Of Getting Rich, has put you off from reading it, go to Laws Of Attraction In The Science Of Getting Rich. Diane1 has taken the book and summarized it into a lens complete with up-to-date language. I think Mr. Wattles would be proud.

Pendleton -- Old Photos

Flag of South Carolina

OhMe has created Pendleton -- Old Photos. The pictures, circa early 1900, show you slices of life in Pendleton, South Carolina along with some commentary from a 90-year-old woman who grew up in Pendleton -- Miss Ruth Boggs. An interesting read. OhMe is another one of Squidoo's enthusiastic lensmasters. Looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next!

Selective Mutism

Love is Spoken Here

Debnet works with distressed children to help them with their emotional and behavioral problems. Follow along as she teaches you about Selective Mutism. You'll go through a case study and get book and website recommendations. View the lineup of vidoes -- you can't help but feel his pain when you listen to SaruwatariB discuss his selective mutism. This lens is a resource for anyone who wants to learn about this disorder.

All About Tear Bottles

Artist Blowing Glass, Copenhagen, Denmark

CounselMom has created an interesting lens entitled All About Tear Bottles. These vials are also known by other names such as lacrymatories and tear catchers. Apparently, it used to be a practice to entomb loved ones along with vials of the mourners' tears. Nowadays, these really beautiful containers serve as meaningful and symbolic gifts of sympathy, condolence, and even joy.

Repairing Children's Toys

Toys in Jeans III

ByRoy, with his lens, Repairing Children's Toys, hopes to convince you not to throw away a child's beloved toy just because it's not working. He takes you through the repair of a basketball game with an electronic scoring system where one of the baskets wasn't registering scores. Pictures by his daughter, and clear steps, show you just how simple it was to repair the basketball game. You'll see that it was just a matter of determining the problem, opening the game up, and having the proper tools (he has tool suggestions). This lens should convince you not to be intimidated by a broken toy but to go ahead and try to fix it. A child's happy face is your reward.

Lensmaster PopTopLady Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

PopTopLady: I'd say it's the whole premise of the site. I, for one, was a little "scared" of hosting a website to promote my crafts (I can't even drag myself to start a blog...). Squidoo lets you put something together rather quickly with all the modules, it's visually appealing and it gave me a lot of exposure. I love to check the traffic on my lenses and where people are coming from and going to.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

PopTopLady: I am sure there is room for improvement (there always is!)...but I can't think of anything right now.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

PopTopLady: I only have 3 lenses right now and one is a little "abandoned". My whole purpose is to share my passions with other people: crochet, the environment and education. But I want to share things that I have done myself.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

PopTopLady: I have 3: Pull Tab (Pop Top) Crochet (inspired by my recycled pull tab crochet) , Plastic Bags -- Let's Do Something About Them Or With Them! (inspired by my desire to make plastic bag crochet), and Hydroponics With Kids (started because of my school project called "Vincent Van Grow"). There are several more in my mind. I should change my lensmaster name to ProcrastinatorLady... =)

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

PopTopLady: Pull Tab Crochet [Pull Tab (Pop Top) Crochet]

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

PopTopLady: Unexpected, even though I wouldn't call it success...

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

PopTopLady: Read the forums and FAQs and give it a try (that's what I did). It's so easy to edit the lens, I'd check them every day and improve as you go. That's how I crochet as well...

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

PopTopLady: Plastic Bags [Plastic Bags -- Let's Do Something About Them Or With Them!]..., because of the environmental issue. I don't think people realize the impact these bags have...they just see them as free garbage bags...

Claudia aka PopTopLady

Lensmaster Mulberry Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

Mulberry: Certainly as a person who is trying to market products/services, convey information to the outside world, or get the word out about anything, Squidoo is a great tool. It's so easy to make and update lenses. But probably what makes Squidoo stand out is the community; the ability it gives you to interact with and learn from others as well as its focus on giving/charity. There are many experienced people here and they share information so freely; there really is no place else like Squidoo on the web.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

Mulberry: I'm not really sure how it could be improved upon. Some form of quality control seems like a good idea at times when you see lenses that are almost "unreadable" or ones that have basically no content at all. It can give us all a bad reptuation. I'm not sure there is a good way to do this however. The only other thing coming to mind is that it might be good to partner with more sites for free access to photos. This probably isn't likely for a number of reasons but I know that good photos can really make a lens and often I am unable to find great ones.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

Mulberry: Most often a lens is inspired by a question I receive through my blog or that I see posted repeatedly in a forum. I use my lenses to try to get that information out there for all those peole who have such questions. My lenses about How to Stop Unwanted Calls and Messages and How to Get Better Cell Phone Reception are examples of this.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

Mulberry: I'm working on number 84 today. I'm not the fastest lensmaster on Squidoo and that's for sure! My goal is 120 by the end of the year and I expect to hit that.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

Mulberry: I guess that would be my Text Messaging Help lens. I made it 5 or 6 months ago and it hovers between 85 and 150 as far as its total lensrank. It gets almost all of its traffic from Google; around 590-620 visits per week and it's had over 2,070 click outs this month. Generally, I can't predict how well a lens will do and this one is an example of that.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

Mulberry: Persistence, persistence, persistence. I never let failure get in the way and I try to always be open to learning new things and adjusting my direction.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

Mulberry: Visit a lot of lenses and hang out in the forum to learn from others. That is the strength of Squidoo. There is not just one way to create a great or successful lens and seeing them all will give newbies the chance to see good things in action and decide how they want to design their own.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

Mulberry: Hmm, that's a tough one actually. Most of my lenses try to provide useful information but they aren't earth shaking, world altering stuff. I do have one or two with more of a social focus but my favorite would have to be my Cell Phones for the Hearing Impaired lens. I really wanted to put together a resource that presented all of the options available for the deaf and hearing impaired; it took a bit of research.

Learn To Relax And Reduce Stress Just By Breathing Deeply

Breathe

It never occurred to me how important breathing is until I started having "episodes." These episodes manifested and progressed during my days in a corporate job that I had come to detest. My breathing would become so shallow that my chest would ache. It got so bad that I couldn't take a deep breath without consciously making the effort -- and that failed more times than not. I would long for bedtime so that I could sleep it off. When it started hitting me in the shower, I knew the job was toast. Learn to relax and reduce stress just by breathing deeply, is a short little lens from Lensmaster hmsweaver -- short, but full of the information you need to learn better breathing. Follow her three easy steps to relaxation through breathing and you will see for yourself how wonderful a lens it is.

Chris Brogan: 50 Ideas For Using Twitter For Business

Squidoo Lens Reviews Commentary and InteractionTwitter's simplicity makes it brilliant! Who knew one could learn and share so much in 140 characters? I was still scratching my head when I felt -- call it intuition -- that Twitter is a site that I should use. Don't be a one-Tweet wonder. Get out there; give of yourself and make connections.

Facial Tic Or Hemifacial Spasm?

Triumph Tulip

Joan4 has a story of triumph about her daughter Kathy's struggle for 10 long years with a facial tic that wouldn't go away. Joan wrote Facial tic or Hemifacial Spasm? so that others who suffer from the medical condition will have a resource for learning more about it, and hopefully, not have to suffer as long as Kathy did. To see Kathy's beautiful smile today (picture toward bottom of lens), you can't tell she had ever had hemifacial spasms. That is the ultimate inspiration for those who suffer.

Waltz Across Texas With Ernest Tubb

Tracks in Field of Coreopsis Wildflowers Near Brenham, Texas, USA

I remember how my dad enjoyed his country music and bluegrass. As a teenager in the 70s, all that banjo twanging, steel guitars, and high-and-lonesome stuff just wasn't for me. Ernest Tubb was heard just in passing and not appreciated at all! Well, times do change. Now, that music reminds me of my dad. I hear what he heard then. It's just beautiful. Jandeantx has created a nice lens at Waltz Across Texas With Ernest Tubb. It's a sweet treat for fans -- perhaps even for fans-to-be.

Twitter Your Way To Being A Better Squidooer

Squidoo Lens Reviews Commentary and InteractionReading Spirituality's post about Twitter at her SquidTop blog got me to thinking about how we Squidooers could get more out of Twitter. While I do believe that Twitter is not for marketing per se, I do believe that Twitter is the perfect way for Squidooers to connect with and help each other.

I propose that you follow as many Squidoo Twitterers as you can find. This link may help. Hopefully, the Twitterers you find will follow you back, thereby being the makings of a great Squidoo community on Twitter.

Here are some ideas for being a Squidoo Twitterer:

  1. Twitter your congratulations to someone for receiving a Squidoo award or some other recognition.
  2. Twitter the lensmaster when you have found a typo or some other glaring error on their lens (using Direct Message so only he or she sees it).
  3. Direct Message (DM) some information that you believe will add to the quality of someone's lens.
  4. Twitter a blog or link find.
  5. Ask questions.
  6. Answer questions.

What do you think? Besides promoting our lenses to each other and the few ideas I just wrote about, what are some more benefits to following Squidoo Twitterers? How can we help each other -- through Twitter -- to be better Squidooers?

Thank you, Lensmasters

Monet's Bouquet of Sunflowers courtesy of euthman.

Dear Interviewed Lensmasters: For you to take the time to be interviewed and to offer your expertise to others makes me deeply grateful. Your interviews give real value -- that makes me even more grateful. It also reinforces my belief that the Squidoo Community is made up of giving, kind, and positive people. From this blog's readers, and myself, I offer you our most heartfelt thanks and appreciation.

Lensmaster Jimmie Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

Jimmie: It's really super duper easy to use. I find it a great, free creative outlet.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

Jimmie: Well, we all have our pet peeves. But I'd be nitpicking to point them out. I'd prefer to remain positive and say that Squidoo is a lot of fun.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

Jimmie: Seeing questions on a forum and thinking, "I know the answer to that!" or even, "I'd like to research that." or Writing a blog entry and finding that it resonates with or fascinates my readers. My squatty potty lens is like that. I had no idea that the squatty potty was so intriguing to people until I included a picture of the squatty in my apartment in a blog post. I had so many comments and questions about that one picture that I made a lens about it, explaining how to use the squatty potty. It's not as bad as most people think. And it actually has some health benefits.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

Jimmie: Over 50.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

Jimmie: By far, my first and most popular lens is Lapbooking. It started as a way to organize my links and ideas -- purely for me! And it blossomed into one of the most frequented lapbooking sites on the web. Amazing.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

Jimmie: Niche. I found a niche -- lapbooking-- that no one had previously taken and organized into a comprehensive webpage.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

Jimmie
:
  1. Jump right in, designing a lens. Just keep fiddling with it until it looks good to you. Visit the Answer Deck and read old posts at the forum.
  2. Learn how to add images to your lens. Graphics are gold!
  3. Then share your lens with those who would be interested in your topic --forums or email groups are great sources of traffic for me.
Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

Jimmie: Actually, I'd like to share two groups that I run:

Broaden Your Horizons -- Learn About China

Charlotte Mason Homeschooling

Lensmaster Jimmie

Lensmaster Kab Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

Kab: For me, squidoo is an outlet to permanently mark things I am thinking about. If I want to learn about something, as many do, I search the web. Squidoo allows me to present my findings to others who are on that same search, to collect them together for my own future reference, and to earn a little money for my effort. Plus, I meet interesting people, learn new things, and have fun doing it.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

Kab: Nothing on the web is ever perfect. It must evolve along with its users, and I think squidoo is great at seeing what people want and improving itself over time. I think that Squidoo Groups have a lot of potential and could use some improvement, but I've heard it is coming.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

Kab: It can be anything! I believe you can make a great lens on ANY topic. I have been inspired by places -- Arlington Cemetery, by people -- Jayne Mansfield, by music -- Greg Pattillo, and even by a tree covered in bubble gum -- Stuck Gum. If it peaks my interest enough to do a google search, then I make a lens on it.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

Kab: I currently have 175 lenses and a handful of lyrics lenses under the name lyrical_kabster.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

Kab: My most popular would probably be Mastering the Office Prank.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one word describes your success?

Kab: Insomnia.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

Kab: A newbie should hit the squidu forums and make themselves known. Get a memorable avatar, post some comments in the forums and on others' lenses. It's Karma, baby!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

Kab: Irish Slaves in the Caribbean. I'd like people to read this lens and realize that history books don't include ALL history, and that slavery was not a one time occurrence that affected one group of people, it has happened again and again through history, and is still happening today.
