SquidPoint Lens

Mountain Climbers [Squidooers ;)] Hike along a Ridge to a Mountaintop

There comes a time when we netizens have to start culling sites we belong to. We go around looking for great sites to join and find some with promise. Many times that promise is left unfulfilled. Then, we find ourselves joined to sites that no longer do anything for us. To be fair, we sometimes just take on too much. SquidPoint is one of those sites with promise. My intuition tells me that when I do some culling (dejoin -- new word!), SquidPoint won't be one of them. It's like Digg, but for Squidooers! If you haven't done so already, go check out the SquidPoint lens. See what SquidPoint is all about; if you like it and want to join, there's a sign-up link right on the page.

Lensmaster Debnet Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

Debnet: I love the variety on there. I enjoy 'meeting' so many interesting people who have such diverse interests. I learn so much from reading about things I never knew about and I enjoy creating new lenses....plus the fact it's SOOO addictive!!!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

Debnet: Hhhhmmm...is anything perfect? A few little quirky things annoy me from time to time but as I'm still fairly new to squidoo, I don't feel qualified to suggest any improvements as it could just be me getting used to things!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

Debnet: Anything!! When I signed up, I had a very clear idea of what I wanted to do and so far I've strayed away from that apart from 2 of my lenses. I get ideas pop into my head for the strangest things, then off I go!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

Debnet: 9 published, one almost ready to go and another 8 waiting to be started on. [As of this posting, Debnet has produced 13 total lenses!]

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

Debnet: Fish & Chips!!!!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

Debnet: I'd like to think originality of content and quality.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

Debnet: Look at other lenses, especially those in the top 100. Note down what it is you like or don't like and then getting going on your own lenses.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

Debnet: Oh gosh, that's a toughie. One of my newest lenses which others can participate in, is FAMILY HEIRLOOMS. I'd love to see that one take off.

The Orphan Trains

Illustration Called "Do Give Us a Bit, That's a Good Fellow," of Street Urchins Sharing Food -- Buy at AllPosters.com

The Orphan Trains, from Stargazer00, is a well-crafted lens that will tell you the story about the time beginning in 1854 when street children were swept from the sidewalks and alleyways of New York City and put on trains taking them to new homes -- and uncertain futures -- throughout the United States.

Pets

Pets -- Buy at AllPosters.com

Having found a kitten on the road the other night, I was looking for cat lenses to review when I came across the Squidoo headquarters for the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) lens. There, as with other charity groups on Squidoo, you can make a lens and have any royalties go directly to the charity for which you've made the lens. A wonderful way to give, don't you think?

Would you like to participate in a little "contest" I am doing? Go to my Squidoo Journey blog and help me name  my new little friend. I am doing a lens at ASPCA Headquarters about him and am soliciting name ideas for him from you. Once I get the lens done, the winning lensmaster will be noted and linked to from it. Squidoo Journey has more details.

New — Star Ratings

Squidoo Lens Reviews Commentary and Interaction

A star rating system is now in place here. Rate my posts with the stars found beneath them. It's anonymous, so go hog wild! LOL I really want to know if what I do here is of any value to you. In addition to giving me feedback, when you rate a review, you are
telling a lensmaster whether or not you like their work. If you do like another lensmaster's work, what a nice bonus it is for them to see it here. The following options in the star-rating system are available:

  • Hated it -- one star

  • Didn't like it -- two stars

  • Liked it -- three stars

  • Really liked it -- four stars

  • Loved it -- five stars

Coming soon is a "Reactions" system so that you can tell me some more of your feelings about the blog (again anonymously). I welcome any and all input -- whether anonymous or not. It seems that my QOTD is not much of a hit and I'd like to start getting some feedback on that if you would be so kind. I must admit that I haven't spent much time on the questions -- just letting them come to me as I post other things. Hopefully, the QOTD will be better and better with your feedback and once I get back into the swing of things -- between my husband being in the hospital, finding the kitten, and my mother coming to live with me, it's been a whirlwind few weeks. Bear with me, OK? And do click some stars -- I won't know if they are in full working order until you do!

Florida Keys Vacation

It was practically one year ago. My husband and I loaded up the extra-long van and headed out to the Florida Keys. For almost Mile Marker 0, Key West, Florida Keys, Florida, USA. Buy from AllPosters.comtwo weeks we stationed at a lovely resort motel on Islamorada and spent most of our time going up and down the islands fishing, eating, and taking over 2000 pictures! I have my own picture of (less professional than the print shown to your right) "Mile Marker 0" right here. Also, the picture I have at the lens, The Best Squidoo Lens NOT To Do, was taken in the Keys at Theater of the Sea. We will never forget that vacation; easily the best ever! One of my favorite pictures is this one taken as my husband and I stood alone looking down off of Seven Mile Bridge. It was amazing to watch the wildlife, to fish -- we let this hammerhead go, of course -- and to just drink in the peace and the breathtaking beauty that was there to behold. (A few more pix here if you'd like to take a look).

There is so much more to do there than what we did. Because of my motion sickness, we couldn't go out to the coral reefs -- didn't take my Dramamine in time. We spent only one day in Key West, we didn't get around to a sight-seeing plane ride, the Dry Tortugas, or the Dolphin Research Center, AND we sure missed not having a boat along with us! There's just too much to see and do in the time we had. But, traveling to the Florida Keys for a vacation is something I am ready to do again! If you haven't been, I highly recommend it. Lensmaster Silver Lotus Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

Silver_Lotus: Squidoo is a wonderful place to learn. Lensmasters have created lenses about a phenomenal number of topics, and quite a few of them are very well done. Learning from lensmasters is just part of it, however -- I usually find that when I am creating a new lens I learn even more about the topic because of the research I do for the lens.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

Silver_Lotus: Squidoo is great, but not perfect. I would love to have the ability to add some scripts to my lenses. For example, tons of widgets are available online, but lensmasters are pretty much restricted to the widgets offered by Squidoo.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

Silver_Lotus: Sometimes I just want to learn and share information about a topic that I care about, which is the case with Your Green Guide, which is about how to live a more eco-friendly life.

I've started using lenses to help charities and worthwhile causes. One of these is Charity Auction Deals. The proceeds go to charity, but it's not just about buying things to benefit charities -- I've also included information and resources to help groups that want to learn more about doing charity auctions online.

Another supports Fair Trade and socially conscious commerce online. It's World of Good and focuses on a new service from eBay called World of Good. The service enables artisans and producers from around the world to sell the work at fair prices and gives shoppers a place where they can buy fairly traded goods and be confident that the products meet certain standards.

Other times I create a lens to support one of my ventures. For example, I created The World of Netsuke: Miniature Sculpture of Japanon Squidoo in conjunction with my website The World of Netsuke. And I did the same with Antique and Vintage Mexican Silver, a Squidoo lens that supports my Vintage Mexican Silver website.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

Silver_Lotus: Right now I have 20 lenses.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

Silver_Lotus: The most popular lens I have is My eBay Life, my first lens, which I started in June 2006.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

Silver_Lotus: Persistence!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

Silver_Lotus: The first thing a Squidoo newbie should do is look at lenses about your topic that others have done and then think of ways to make yours different and better. And newbies MUST keep in mind that Squidoo can be extremely addictive!

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

Still working on getting the blog updated to its new working order. Please be patient as this one is time-consuming -- like a lot of things online. :)

On Being Homeless In Old Orchard, Maine

A Happy Family, 1868

Eelkat tells about how the powers that be in her small hometown condemned her lifestyle, tried to strip away her family's dignity, and ultimately caused her to have to live in a tent with her dogs and cats. On Being Homeless In Old Orchard, Maine is a compelling story of how your life and livelihood can be stripped away by cruel and greedy human beings who never should have had any power over other people in the first place.

Family Pajamas

Celebrate Family

How many pictures do you have of your family in pajamas -- at Christmas, for instance -- where each one is dressed in a mishmash of styles unrelated to each other? It takes away from the picture, doesn't it? Nancy Oram, at her lens, Family Pajamas, gives you a selection of choices for matching up your family members in related loungewear. It may be that you like everyone matched on a daily basis or just for those holiday pix. Either way, you'll get some inspiration here.

Regarding Comments Issue And Question Of The Day

Squidoo Lens Reviews Commentary and Interaction
I've been working with the commenting area on this blog, and I've got it quite messed up right now. The comment form may be visible to you and it may not. I, myself, can't even read old comments! So, we cannot very well do a Question Of The Day. We will resume QOTD as soon as I can get commenting fixed. That may not be until Thursday or Friday, though. Meanwhile, if you think of some fun, silly, serious Squidoo questions you want to ask your fellow lensmasters, email me. --Happy Squidooing!

Lensmaster OhMe Interview

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What makes you passionate about Squidoo.com?

OhMe: There are at least 3 things that make me passionate about Squidoo:
  1. The number one reason that I am passionate about Squidoo is that it has enabled my sister, Joan (Joan4 on Squidoo), and I to work together on something. We are on the phone or emailing all through the day and it has been great. I am very close to both my sisters but it is always especially nice to find things you can do together. Joan got me started with Squidoo when she did a lens on Pendleton. She knew if I ever tried it, I would be hooked and she was right.
  2. It has been great to be able to do my part in promoting our small town through Squidoo. I have 4 lens about Pendleton, SC and they are all seeing a good bit of traffic.
  3. I have to admit that I do enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes with a good lens. I don't work so I miss that feeling that comes when you know you have done something good and it is rewarded. Oh, how I do love those rewards like lensrank, stars, positive comments, etc.
Squidoo Lens Reviews: Is Squidoo perfect already or what could make it better?

OhMe: I think Squidoo is great and am too new at this to be making any suggestions for improvement. I just hope that they are able to keep up with the large number of Squidoo-ers.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What inspires you to make a new lens?

OhMe: Everything I hear, everything I see, and everything I do. My friends and family joke that I want to make a lens about everything. I guess I am truly addicted because that is the first thing that pops into my head when I experience something: Hey, that would make a good lens. I am sure there are lots of people who know exactly what I am talking about but not sure all would be willing to admit it.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: How many lenses do you have?

OhMe: I only have seven right now but hope to be at ten by the end of September.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What is your most popular lens?

OhMe: My most popular lens is Pendleton Photos. I have enjoyed all the positve, fun feedback on the Pendleton Old Photos lens. It has been to receive the comments on those pictures. People have contacted me that I haven't heard from in years.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What one sentence or one word describes your success?

OhMe: That would have to be "Thank you, Joan". Joan has been very patient with me and taught me so much. She really ought to have classes for newbies. Hey, I think I will do a lens about Joan.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: What should a newbie do first?

OhMe: Joan insisted from the beginning that I understand about "community" within squidoo and the importance of going to the forum and reading, learning, and posting. She taught me that I should try to read and rate at least 5 lenses a day and learn from them.

Squidoo Lens Reviews: Which of your lenses do you want to make sure the whole world knows about?

OhMe: I want the whole world to know how wonderful Pendleton, SC is so any of the 4 Pendleton lenses:

How To Wash Your Hands

Clean

With my husband being sick and having surgery it got me to thinking about all the germs that one could come into contact with in a hospital. One particularly nasty affliction I would like for us to steer clear of is MRSA. This superbug is showing up not only in hospitals, but in health clubs, and schools and colleges. According to How To Wash Your Hands, by Comfortdoc, hand washing is the single most important thing we can all do to help prevent the spread of infection. How To Wash Your Hands is interesting, very informative, and serves as an excellent instigator for us to re-commit or become committed to a hand-washing routine.
