The message is clear. We are all human beings. And we all have been dealt a different hand. Whether it's Asperger Syndrome or losing a leg in a war or even perfect health, we all are who we are, no matter where life takes us or what else the journey brings.
Lensmaster Kylyssa takes you into the heart of homelessness (from her own heartrending viewpoint) and lets you see not only how society makes it worse but how society can make it better. Read What I Learned While Being Homeless. This writer teaches empathy with eloquence.
It's such a waste of time to judge others when we could be in their situation, whatever it may be, but for that one card being dealt. So much wiser to count one's blessings and move forward holding someone else's hand so that they, too, may be blessed in some way for your efforts. It's so easy to be a help. It's so easy to stop judging and know, really know, that the homeless are our brothers and our sisters.
And our nation's children. One in fifty children are homeless in America. That's 1.5 million of our innocents! (The Full State Report Card on Child Homeless in America). And while I'm writing this, if you can afford it, in these hard times for all of us, bring a light into a child's eyes, give them some comfort by Making and giving a shoe-box gift for children in need across the United States.
To read What I Learned While Being Homeless and not gain at least that much from it is to remain in the mire of self-defeat and self-righteousness. And while it's still a new year, let's state again our goals to grow and learn. To be more human.
Kylyssa has written many lenses on the topic of homelessness, all worthy of your time.
