Let's Take a Trip to Rochester, New York

I love Rochester, New York card
Some of my favorite lenses to read are in the "Travel & Places" category. Having lived all over the United States myself, I love reading about places other people have been, and especially 'home town' stories

I lived in Rochester, New York for many years (and still have relatives there), so I couldn't resist reading about my city written by another Rochester native, Beth aka SoyCandleLover-Maker. It brought back so many memories!

Rochester, New York is located just south of Lake Ontario, less than 90 miles from Buffalo and Niagara Falls and a 30 minute drive to the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. Toronto, Canada is only 70 miles away, but it takes 3+ hours to get there (Lake Ontario sort of gets in the way)!

Beth describes many of the well-known sites in Rochester -- home to Eastman Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb -- making the Rochester metropolitan area the second largest regional economy in all of New York State. She also talks about some of the gorgeous homes located on East Avenue (including the George Eastman house -- now a museum of photographic & film history).

Rochester is famous for it's annual free 10-day Lilac Festival held every May in Highland Park. Over 500 varieties among 1200 lilac bushes are planted there. It truly is a sight to behold.

Located in the Rochester area is the 3rd oldest Rollercoaster in operation. It's wooden and located at SeaBreeze Park, an amusement park on the lakefront since 1879. Rochester also has sports teams: Hockey, Soccer, Lacrosse and my all-time favorite, "The Rochester Red Wings" minor league baseball team. Ah... the many Red Wings games I watched there!

My very favorite part of SoyCandle's lens is her list of "You know you've from Rochester, NY when..." because I can relate to every item on the list -- it's ALL True!
Examples:
#13. It can be 70 degrees one day, below freezing the next, and you think nothing of it. (I actually experienced this in a 4 hour span of time one day!).
#16. You order a white hot and a pop, and the counterman knows what you're talking about. (If YOU don't know what they are, just ask me or Beth and we'll explain)! :-)

Even if I wasn't a former Rochester, New York native, I would have enjoyed this very well-written informational, educational and entertaining story by Soy CandleLover-Maker.

  1. A white hot and a pop, huh? My first time hearing of it. Well, guessing that a "pop" is what we call a "drink" here -- Pepsi, Coke... May I ask here or should I email you? Sure wanna know! And gracious, you make the lens sound wonderful, Pat.

  2. "Pop" appears to be an East Coast word for 'soda' or soft drink :-). It's what I grew up with..

White Hot is a local Rochester 'hot dog' made famous by the Zweigle's company, a food manufacturer in Rochester known for its hot dogs & sausages. Zweigle's white hots are the official hot dog of the Rochester Red Wings baseball team, the Buffalo Bills, and several other sports teams. Zweigle's also makes 'Red Hots', but the white hot comes from the fact that it is not cured or smoked, allowing the hot dog to retain its naturally white color. Rochester natives who have moved away love 'white hots' so much that they 'stock up' when home visiting! :-)

  3. Pat, I loved reading about Rochester, NY, and now understand where your love of baseball originated. I grew up near Niagara Falls but have never been to Rochester.

  5. Well, if I ever make it to Rochester, I am going to order a white hot just like a Rochester native does. :D That is if I can you order it with mustard and onions. :)

Wednesday, I am so honored that you liked this lens. I'm glad that you enjoyed you visit back home. :D
P.S. I never liked white hots, but I've heard that some past residents have it shipped to them packed in dry ice.

Kim, Buffalo does get in the way on a road trip from Niagara Falls to Rochester. :D

Mimi, Then you have to go garbage plate, which is without rolls, on top of home fries with your mustard and onions all over the top. With a pop. :D

  7. Well, y'all have sold me. Will go for the whole garbage plate. : )

  8. I'll take a garbage plate too! haha.. I want to see that Lilac festival. I'll bet that is a sight to see. I've never been to Rochester, but it sounds like a great place Pat.

  9. Dusty, if you Google 'Rochester Lilac Festival', you can get a peek at a bit of the Lilac Festival.

I actually prefer 'red hots' to 'white hots' myself. :-) And Beth is right, former Rochester natives actually have these hot dogs 'shipped to them or brought by visiting relatives. (My dad used to bring a cooler of Zweigler hots and Genesee Beer (which is a local beer in Rochester).

Beth, I think we all enjoyed a visit to Rochester through your delightfully written story. Thanks for being our tour guide!

  10. I'm with you Pat! I've lived so many places, I sometimes forget the local name for Coke -- pop, soda, drink -- it's all the same to me! This was a fun lens. I have never been North of D.C. but hope to get there some day, especially NY. Thanks for a great review of a fun and informative lens.
