Question Of The Week 11.29.09

Squidoo Lens Reviews Question of the Week

Is it possible to make a living on Squidoo?

Only one comment this week, so running it through again. Surely you have something to say? :)

The lensmaster who writes the best post (chosen by me) gets all of their lenses linked from here next weekend.

  1. Is it possible to make a living off squidoo? Well, I would not advise anybody trying. You're more likely in fact to make a killing on squidoo if you spread your wings a bit and start a blog in your niche and put affiliate links there as much as on squidoo. And then link to your blog from your niche lenses and from your blog to your niche lenses. Similarly: if you want to make a living online, do make hubs on your most profitable niches and interlink them with your blog and your lenses.

ALL your online property will rank better and therefore make better sales if you do NOT focus on squidoo alone. And then, with focus and unique content, you may make enough on squidoo to stay afloat. The rest may help you do a bit more than that.

  2. Make a living ON Squidoo? No! Make a living THROUGH Squidoo? Possibly.

Too many lensmasters start on Squidoo thinking that they can earn good money by just making lenses and getting them into the Top Tier. But when you think about it, the maths just do not add up.

The Top Tier is just 2,000 lenses. There's more than 1m lenses competing for that very narrow payband, which has not increased in relation to the number of lenses published. The competition is huge and once you get a lens in the Top Tier, it takes a lot of work plus other factors (some of which you have no influence over) to keep it there.

And all for what? Between $11 and $13 permonth.

However, Squidoo is a great platform for getting traffic to other places. As Katinka says - you have to spread your wings. You also have to STOP listening to the so called experts, who keep emailing you lists of "hot topics that will make money on Squidoo". Thousands of other people are getting those lists and creating those lenses that will compete with yours.

Find a niche. One that you are genuinely enthusiastic about and develop it. Forget about weight loss, teeth whitening, dog training and all those other topics that you know nothing about. Use Squidoo as a platform to send traffic to your other sites. Don't think of your lenses as the central point of your online presence. Use them as satellites.

Sometimes you may get lucky and make a big sale every once in awhile, but I believe the people who are making a decent income are not doing it on Squidoo - they are doing it through Squidoo, there is a difference. Squidoo is just one small cog in the wheel, just a small part of a bigger network that you have to develop online if you are to earn any decent money.
