Question Of The Week 09.06.09

Squidoo Lens Reviews Question of the Week

Is it best to concentrate on just one niche, multiple niches, or to just create lenses covering your varied interests?

The lensmaster who writes the best post (chosen by me) gets all of their lenses linked from here next weekend.

  1. Personally it is my varied interests and within my eclectic set of lenses I've tossed in a few niche ideas that all interconnect. For instance, my menopause series...if it was not for the lens about Menopause and laughter I have a sneaky feeling the other two may not get very many hits.

So to answer your question {smiles} - It's an individual choice not necessarily a best or worst scenario.

  2. I tried the niche thing and somehow I've ended up with 81 niches ( I appologize to any of your dyslexic Southern Baptist readers who may see that as 18......)

I think squidoo is a great place to make webpages about anything you care about. For most people that will naturally center around several niches. Hardly anybody will make a lens for each and all categories you can make a lens in.

I would never tell people to only make lenses in one niche. After all, another niche might be much more successful. I'd say instead to make lenses about whatever you want, and then continue with what works (sells, get you traffic).

  4. I think everyone should be considered an authority on something. Niches provide that opportunity. However, I also want to write about all the other things that I am knowledgable and passionate about.

I know that if I need information there is a Squidoo lensmaster I can trust who has the goods.

Everyone knows that Drifter is the leather and motorcycle trip expert and JaguarJulie has those foods down to a science. I can always go to MiMi GrowWear to find out which tool or work clothing I should wear for certain activities...like caulking. Michelle Willow can tell us which toys to buy and me, I review a few books every so often. There is an authority on nearly anything you need.

Niches are great for showing authority on a subject or two, but you should just have fun and let others have fun along with you.

And just btw, I think anyone who brags on a public page about having 18...oh, nevermind.. that says 81 niches:)

  5. It's the best to write about your interests, hobbies and passions and use Squidoo to transform those into niches! ;)

  6. I create lenses the way I first started 2 years ago: I get an idea about something I know about or that interests me. I create a lens and it generates other ideas for me that become spinoffs - voila, niche creation. My best performing lenses are related to and linked to my web sites and blogs about my own coloring pages and clip art - I'm a graphic artist - but they're not my only interests. I get ideas from looking over photo albums of my kids and remembering the cool stuff I did with them. To me what I did/know about seems ordinary but I've come to realize that it's not so ... many folks are looking to learn, so I'm happy to share. Besides, it's lots of fun to research the topics, learn about new products and techniques, and I get to meet lots of interesting lensmasters!
